The speaker

Join us as we host Dan Carmody, President of  the Eastern Market Corporation. Dan will discuss: Strengthening Regional Food Systems.

Event information

Dan Carmody, President of Eastern Market will discuss the role of Eastern Market in fostering a stronger regional food economy in SE Michigan.

While many people have family connections to the long history of Detroit’s venerable public market, few understand the pivotal role the market is playing in building a more robust food economy in the region. Demographics and changing consumer preferences are ushering in a new era in our food economy and Eastern Market has developed strong programs to incubate and accelerate new food businesses while retaining and attracting more established ones. In addition, Carmody will provide an overview to the markets food access programs and work that Eastern Market Corporation (the non-profit that operates the market and serves as the economic development organization for the Eastern Market District on behalf of the City of Detroit) is doing to preserve the legacy of the market area in the face of a tsunami of real estate investment.

Meet Dan Carmody

Armed with wit and an appetite for hard work, blessed by good luck, and fueled by passion for better places Dan Carmody has led local governments, small businesses, and non-profits during a career focused on reviving rust-belt cities. Sharpened by forty years of implementing ideas, he is guided by the E*I*E*I*O principles: Successful programs need to be entrepreneurial, inclusive, empirical, incremental and organic.

For the last ten years Carmody has had the pleasure and privilege of serving as President of Eastern Market Corporation, the non-profit that manages and promotes one of Detroit’s most venerable institutions. Under his leadership, EMC works with many partners to make Detroit healthier, wealthier, and happier by increasing the consumption of healthy food, by creating and expanding ventures and employment throughout the regional food sector, and by fully utilizing the market’s conviviality – it’s role of bringing people together – to celebrate good food and each other.

See you there on Jan. 25th!

The event will take place at Hilton Garden Inn and includes a sit-down breakfast.
